I have a Masters in psychology and a ph. D in young adult psychology from Norfus University. Medical degree from Gladden
What is your job?
I am a psychiatrist who specializes in student counseling at Columbus University
How did you become interested in hazing?
My son was killed in gang activity
Why do high school groups “haze” other members?
High school groups and clubs emulate what they see in movies and what they hear from parents and siblings
Where do you hear hazing occurring?
Hazing occurs in many high school groups. I have many students come to me about the behavior of Great Falls High School drum line
Have you ever talked to the Great Falls band director?
Jesse Thomas always minimizes the problem whenever I talk to her/ him
Is hazing improving?
Hazing seems to get increasingly cruel each year
How do you know Chuck?
Chuck was my patient since the beginning of his freshman year
Why did Chuck have to come to you?
Kids had teased him most of his life and his parents put tremendous pressure on him.
He had a perfectionist personality and most likely lost weight through eating disorders
Did Chuck have any unhealthy addictions?
He occasionally drank and used drugs but at least was not yet at the point of addiction
How often did Chuck see you?
I saw him three time a week since the beginning of his freshman year
What did you tell Chuck when he told you he was trying out for the drum line?
When chuck first told me about trying out for the line, I counseled him against it because he was still fragile. He was insistent though so I offered him support
Did Chuck think he would make the drum line?
He seemed pretty confident that he would
What was your phone call with Chuck about?
When Chuck called me at the beginning of Hell Week, he told me that it was very difficult, but wouldn’t elaborate. I could tell he was very upset and frightened. He told me that he would show them he had what it took. I asked him to report to the band director, but he threatened to discontinue our sessions if I told anyone anything
Did Chuck have any fears?
Chuck had a fear of heights from witnessing his favorite Aunt Sarah commit suicide by jumping off a high ledge
