Dr Dornelas Flashcards
Define ecological competition.
Interaction between individuals/species where the presence of one reduces the fitness of the other.
Give 3 gestures of a limiting resource.
Scarce, important and controls growth rate.
What is exploitation competition?
Depleting the limiting resource so that it is unavailable to other organisms.
What is interference competition?
Actively reducing a competitors access to a limiting resource.
What is pre-emptive competition?
Occupying space so that other organisms cannot establish themselves there.
Define symbiosis
2 or more organisms living together constantly and intimately, where at least 1 benefits.
What is parasitism in symbiosis?
One organism benefits at the expense of another.
What is commensalism in symbiosis?
The symbiont benefits and the host is unaffected.
What is mutualism in symbiosis?
Both organisms benefit.
What are obligate organisms?
Organisms which cannot live with the other in their symbiotic relationship.
What are facultative organisms?
Organisms which are advantaged by their symbiotic relationship but can live without it???
What are the temperature limits for life on Earth?
-50C to 122C
What is a homeotherm?
Organisms with efficient metabolisms and insulation which keep their internal temperate fairly constant.
What is a poikilotherm?
Organisms which do not maintain their internal temperature and can deal with some extreme temperatures.
Describe a cryophile
An organism capable of growth and reproduction at extreme cold temperatures.
