Maximum Dose

usually used for treatment. Given during
instances when the drug effects are
needed quickly
Loading Dose
the amount of a
medication administered to maintain a
desired level of the medication in the
blood.
Maintenance Dose
the amount of a drug
that causes untoward symptoms in the
majority of persons.
Toxic Dose
that quantity of an agent
that will or may be sufficient to cause
death
Lethal Dose
the drug doses what is supposed to do. When the desired effect takes place, the therapeutic goal is achieved. Example: Taking aspirin to reduce temperature
Desired effect
are mild but annoying
responses to medication
Example: stomach pain caused by
paracetamol/acetamenophen
Side effect
are more severe symptoms or problems that arise because of the medication Example: severe gastric bleeding from an ulcer caused by aspirin
Adverse effect
is an antigenantibody reaction. The body develops hives, rashes, itching, or swelling of the skin. Example: a rash or shortness of breath is occasionally seen in patients allergic to aspirin
Allergic response
is a severe form of allergic reaction that is life threatening. Example: severe shortness of breath, may stop breathing, or may have cardiac collapse
Anaphylactic response
are strange,
unique, or unpredicted reactions.
Example: blood in the urine caused by
aspirin
Idiosyncratic response
are reactions that are the opposite of what would be expected. Example: • An analgesic (pain reliever) causes an increase in pain • Sedatives prescribed for adults causes hyperactivity in children
