Dorothy Johnson Flashcards
States that each individual has patterned, purposeful,
repetitive ways of acting that comprises a behavioral system
specific to that individual
Behavioral System Model
Advocates the fostering of efficient and effective behavior functioning in the patient to prevent illness
Behavioral System Model
Proposed that nursing care facilitated the client’s maintenance of a state of equilibrium
Behavioral System Model
Proposed that clients were “stressed” by a stimulus of either an internal or external nature. These stressful stimuli created such disturbances or “tensions”, in a patient that a state of
disequilibrium occurred.
Behavioral System Model
Two state of equilibrium
Reduce stressful stimuli
Support natural & adaptive processes
The theory springs from Nightingale’s belief that nursing’s goal is to help the individuals prevent or recover from disease or injury.
Behavioral System Model
According to this theory the science and art of nursing should focus on the patient as an individual and not on the specific disease entity.
Behavioral System Model
A metaparadigms that has two major systems: the biological and the behavioral system
Person by Johnson
It is a behavioral system with
patterned, repetitive, and
purposeful ways of behaving that
link the person to his environment
Person by Johnson
A metaparadigm that is an elusive state that is affected
by social, psychological,
biological and physiological
factors
Health by Johnson
The balance stability of the
subsystems
Health by Johnson
lack of balance
poor health
Consists of all factors that are not
part of the individual’s behavioral
system but influence the system
Environment by Johnson
Factors vary from culture to culture however outcomes are the same
Environment by Johnson
A metaparadigm which
preserve the organization of the
patient’s behavior by means of
imposing regulatory mechanisms
or by providing resources while
the patient is under stress
Nursing by Johnson
Three Functional Requirements
Protection
Nurturance
Stimulation
It must be “protected” from noxious influences with which the system cannot cope.
Protection
It must be “nurtured” through the input of appropriate supplies from the environment.
Nurturance
It must be “stimulated” for use to enhance growth and prevent stagnation
Stimulation
Is the output of intra organismic structures and processes as they coordinate and articulate by responding to changes in sensory
stimulation.
