dopamine - IGF Flashcards
1
Q
growth hormone
A
- stimulates synthesis and release of IF-1 from liver = anabolic effect
- promotes lipolysis, gng, protein synth
2
Q
GH deficiency
A
- retarded growth or possibly dwarfism
- heritble / acquired
- GHRH defect or pituitary problem (tumor, trauma, infection)
- clinical manifestation:
- cardiovascular, psychosocial problems, dec muscle and bone mass, inc body fat, low enery and reduce stregnth
- diagnosis
- measurement of GH levels
- may require basal and stim GH levels
3
Q
Somatropin
A
- recombinant human GH
- monitor IGF-1 levels and height –> stop when growth has ceased
4
Q
Mecasermin
A
- for children w/ GH receptor defects or antibodies to GH
5
Q
Sermorelin
A
- synthetic form of GHRH
- NOT USEFUL IF problem is @ level of pituitary
6
Q
GH excess
A
- gigantism - for young
- excessive linear growth
- acromegaly for adults
- resp/car problem, GI tumors
- elevated IGF or GH
- caused by tumor of anterior pituitary
7
Q
ocreotide
A
- inhibits GH release
8
Q
pegvisomant
A
- dec IGF-1
- alternative to somatostatin analogs
9
Q
Prolactin
A
- peptide hormone from anterior pituitary
- receptor siilar to GH
- NO treatment for prolactin deficiencies
too much prolactin = enlarge breast and lactate formation
10
Q
Dopamine
A
- released from hypothalamus to dec prolactin secretion
- therefore dopamine like drugs can be used to dec prolactin
11
Q
Bromocriptine
cabergolide
A
- stimulate D2 dopamine receptors in anterior pituitary –> dec prolactin secretion
