(DONE) Lab 2 Prep Flashcards
1
Q
what is a chemical change
A
process in which a pure substance is converted via chemical reaction to a new subtance
2
Q
what are the types of chemical reactions? (3)
A
- elements form a compound
- compound decomposing to form elements/ new compounds
- compounds form new compounds
3
Q
what are the 5 signs of a chemical reaction
A
- precipitate forms (solution looks cloudy)
- gas evolves (bubbles or odour)
- heat/ absence of heat (vessel holding substance feels colder/hotter)
- color change
- change in pH
4
Q
what will you do in part A of the experiment?
A
mix chemicals and determine if a reaction has occured
5
Q
what will you do in part B of the experiment?
A
separate mixture of sand and sodium carbonate (physical separation then chemical modification by adding calcium chloride)
6
Q
soluble
A
dissolves in water
7
Q
insoluble
A
does not dissolve in water
8
Q
how will you separate the sand and sodium carbonate?
A
gravity filtration
9
Q
how will you get the precipitate?
A
vacuum filtration
