Q

What is the process of finding critical power?

A
  1. Set the athlete to do a very hard exercise and time how long they can do it for
  2. Send them home and come in the next day and do the same thing for a slightly lower power
  3. Do this until the athlete can do the exercise for 30 minutes
  4. Plot the hyperbolic graph, critical power is the x-axis asymptote.

Q

What variables must be in a steady state for critical power?

A
  • VO2
  • Blood lactate concentration
  • Heart rate
  • “Fatigue products”
  • “Musclec cell physiology”

Q

What is critical power related to?
Power at:
1. Lactate threshold
2. Lactate turnpoint
3. MLSS
4. VO2max

A

3 & 4, lactate turnpoint is an estimation of MLSS as well

Q

What is W’?

W Prime

A

“Power above CP” x “Duration”, that corresponds to a fixed energy store mainly represening anaerobic capacity

Q

Where does the energy above critical power come from?

A
  • PCr, glycolysis
  • Small contribution from myoglobin and haemoglobin stores
  • Once these are used, fatigue kicks in and exercise stops

Q

An athlete can maintain a power output of 600W for 30s, CP is 300W. How long can they exercise at 400W for?
1. ~ 25s
2. ~ 45s
3. ~ 60s
4. ~ 90s

A

~ 90s, W’: 300 x 30 = 9000 J
9000 / 100 = 90s

Q

A : W’ = 8000 J and CP = 300 W
B : W’ = 9000 J and CP = 280 W
Which athlete is more likely to win a time trial over 40km?

A

A : Higher CP means better at endurance events
