Doctrine 9 Flashcards
Doctrine 9
We believe that continuance in a state of salvation depends upon continued obedient faith in Christ.
What does doctrine 9 mean?
- Its possible to not continue in our salvation
- There are responsibilities given to humans in our ongoing salvation
- We have to willingly chose to be faithful and obedient to Christ daily
Apostasy
a falling away, a withdrawl, a defection. To turn ones back on or reject.
Backsliding
Falling away from God after being saved.
What safeguards are there to help us continue in a state of salvation?
- Direct means: prayer, meditation, scripture reading, fellowship, worship.
- Indirect means: Christian gathering, disciplines, Christian service, devotions
Give 3 biblical references (and explain) to demonstrate that it is possible to fall away from salvation.
- John 15:5-We can only grow in Christ if we remain in working relationship with Him. If we do not remain in Him, we will not have life.
- Hebrews 2:1-3 We have to pay careful attention to the things God speaks to us and will be justly punished for ignoring salvation.
- Revelation 2:4-5 Jesus must always be our first love. If we put anything above Him we lose the light He gives us.
Who was Jacobus Arminius?
- A reformed calvanist preacher
- believed in: free will, universal salvation, and prevenient grace.
What were some important theological contributions that Arminius gave to Christianity?
- Universal salvation
- Free will
- Prevenient grace
Who was John Wesley?
- Founder of Methodism
- influenced greatly by Arminius
- Many of his followers were ridiculed for not following the common ways of Calvinism.
- Called Methodist because they were methodic, held class meetings and were intent on asking personal questions about your walk with God.
Total Depravity
We agree that we are totally depraved, but -
-Calvanist believe that because of TD man is not able to respond.
- We believe God extends grace to us to be able to turn away and accept Jesus.
(Acts 2) The disciples are addressing the crowds in Jerusalem and explaining who Christ was and how it was all foretold in the old testament. When the people realized what he was saying was true they asked what they could do and he said ‘repent!”
Unconditional Election
Calvinism believes that we can’t choose whether we are saved because God has predestined those who will be saved. Arminianism says Christ died for everyone and whoever is willing to believe but you can choose not to believe. (John 3:16-18)
Limited Atonement
Calvinism believes that only the preselected are saved by the atoning sacrifice of Jesus. Arminianism believes that Jesus died for everyone if they choose to believe. (John 3:16)
Irresistible Grace
Calvinism says that once God’s grace is presented, you have no choice but to respond to it. Arminianism believes that God’s prevenient grace goes before us and gives us the opportunity/ability to respond to it. (John 6:40)
Perseverance of Saints
Calvinism believes in once saved always saved. Arminianism response is that you need to have a continued obedient faith in God. (John 15:1-5)
Discuss at least two Scripture verses that emphasize God at work with us to keep us living for Christ. Give references, actual verse content, and be able to explain what they mean.
•2 Thessalonians 3:3-
–But the Lord is faithful, and he will strengthen and protect you from the evil one
• 1 Corinthians 10:13
–No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.
