Doctrine 7 & 8 Flashcards
Doctrine 7
We believe that repentance toward God, faith in our Lord Jesus Christ and regeneration by the Holy Spirit are necessary to salvation
Doctrine 8
We believe that we are justified by grace through faith in our Lord Jesus Christ and that he that believeth hath the witness in himself.
Explain the involvement of the Trinity in conversion
God’s grace determines possibility of salvation
Jesus’ death provides atonement
The Holy Spirit convicts of the need
(requires our participation)
Growth- Holy Spirit gives guidance and strength
Ultimate sanctification is by the work of the Holy Spirit by the will of God and the sacrifice of Jesus
Stages of Repentance
- Conviction of Sin
- Hatred of Sin
- Sorrow for Sin
- Renunciation of Sin
- Confession of Sin
- Desire for forgiveness
- Submission to God
- Willingness to make restitution
What are the conditions of salvation?
- Repentance is toward God (Ps. 51:1-4)
2. Faith is in Jesus Christ (Romans 3:22)
Diagram the four-fold picture of Christ’s saving work
1.Sacrifice The answer our to guilt.
2.Propitiation
The answer to God’s wrath
3. Reconciliation
The answer to God’s alienation from us.
4. Redemption
The answer to our bondage to sin and Satan.
5 different types of Regenerations
a. New creation – 2 Cor. 5:17 (anyone in Christ is new. The old is gone and the new is here.)
b. New Birth – Born Again – John 3:3-7 (Cannot enter womb again. Flesh gives birth to flesh and Spirit gives birth to Spirit. You must be born again.)
c. Born of the Spirit – John 3:5-8 (Spirit gives birth to Spirit. You can hear wind but don’t know where it comes from or where it’s going. So everyone is born with the Spirit.)
d. Born of God– John 1:13 (those that believe in him, he gives the right be be called children of God)
e. Passing from death to life – 1 John 3:14 (We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love each other. Anyone who does not love remains in death)
Legal Term for Justification
Declared not guilty, The Judge rules in favor of the condemned, clearing them of all blame and freeing them of every charge
Justification biblically
Old Testament: Legal justification” embodied in the Law. You were justified by keeping the Law. Legal justification for the innocent person
New Testament: For the guilty – not the innocent.
Accused admits their guilt, but is justified not be works, but by faith alone.
Process of Justification: 4 areas
Problem, Process, Provision, Price
Problem
There is no one righteous. No one can be right by doing their own works. There is no way that we can be accepted by God on our terms. Romans 3:9-20 (No one is declared righteous by the works of the law)
Process
~Recognize ourselves as sinners before God (human
element)
~~~Repentance toward God - Psalm 51:4 (I’ve sinned and done evil, you are right to judge justly.)
~~~Faith in our Lord Jesus Christ - Eph. 1:7 (We are redeemed of our sins because of His blood.)
~Restored to fellowship with God (divine element)
~~~Act of mercy – compassion - 1 Peter 1:3 (God has given us mercy by the resurrection of His son Jesus)
~~~Act of grace – undeserved - Eph. 2:4-5 (We are alive in Christ but dead by our transgressions it is by grace we are saved.)
Provision
Romans 3:21-26 There is righteousness that we can have From God (vs 21). Apart from the Law (vs 21). Through faith in Jesus (vs 22). Available to all (vs 22-23). Comes by his grace
Price
Romans 3:24
~God could only justify us – declare us to be righteous by receiving the death of someone else.
~Jesus dies to satisfy the requirements of the Law (I Cor. 5:2)
~Through the substitutionary death of his son.
~God’s love wants to forgive sins, but his holiness says that he must punish sin and uphold the Law.
Two types of Justification
Imputed- God now considers us righteous, instantly-verdict rendered and now sees us through the lens of Christ
Imparted- God now makes us righteous, a continuous transformation process all possible through the Holy Spirit.
