DNA Review Flashcards
How many “sides” does DNA have?
2
What is DNA replication?
The copying of DNA during
S phase of interphase.
Where does DNA replication occur?
Nucleus
If one side of DNA is:
TAGCTAGC, what is on the complimentary side?
ATCGATCG
How many sides are used as a template during DNA Replication?
Both (2) sides are used to replicate DNA.
What is transcription?
Using DNA as a template to make RNA.
Where does transcription occur?
Nucleus
How many sides of DNA are used as a template during transcription?
Only 1, the active side.
What is a codon?
A codon is a sequence of 3 mRNA nucleotides that code for a particular amino acid.
What types of RNA are involved in translation?
mRNA
tRNA
rRNA
What is a purine?
A nitrogen base with a double ring shape.
What is a pyrimidine?
A nitrogen base with a single ring shape.
Which bases are purines?
Guanine and Adenine
Which bases are pyrimidines?
Thymine, Cytosine & Uracil
What is found in a DNA nucleotide?
Phosphate
Deoxyribose (sugar)
Nitrogen base (A,T,G, or C)
What is a base pair?
A base pair is is two complimentary nucleotides held together by a weak hydrogen bond between the bases.
Where are anticodons found?
tRNA
What is the job of mRNA?
mRNA is a readable version of DNA’s instructions used by ribosomes to make proteins.
If DNA has the sequence ATGC, what RNA nucleotides would be complimentary to it?
UACG
Which base is not found in RNA?
Thymine
