DNA Replication Flashcards
What are the three steps of DNA Replication?
Unzip, Zip-Up, and Rewind
What is the Unzip step?
It’s when an enzyme splits the DNA down the middle
What is the enzyme used in the Unzip step?
DNA Helicase –> it breaks hydrogen bonds and unwinds the double-helix
What is the Zip-Up step?
Adds new nucleotides to each side of the original DNA strand
What is the enzyme used in the Zip-Up step?
DNA Polymerase: adds new nucleotides one at a time to both open sides
What is the Rewind step?
2 new molecules twist back into 2 new double-helixes using the previously separated helix.
What is the Mitotic Cell Division?
The replication of chromosomes from the parent cell to the two offspring cells
Why does DNA have to be replicated?
So that there are two of each chromosomes from the parent cell to the offspring cells.
What is the phase called for when the DNA replication is occurring?
The S-Phase or Synthesis phase
What is the nitrogenous base rule?
In DNA adenine always bonds with thymine and cytosine always bonds with guanine
What are all of the nitrogenous bases?
A, T, C, and G
