DNA Replication: Flashcards
What is DNA composed of?
Nitrogen bases + sugar phosphate backbone
What are the four nitrogen bases?
Adenine (A) - goes with T
Thymine (T) - goes with A
Cytosine (C) - goes with G
Guanine (G) - goes with C
How many chromosomes do each cell need?
46 chromosomes (23 pairs)
What are chromosomes?
The storage containers for DNA (they hold DNA)
What does each chromosome pair contain?
DNA
What is chromatin?
The casing of DNA: located in the nucleus of a cell
What happens before the DNA replication?
The chromosomes organize itself into 23 pair
What happens when a cell gets replicated?
It splits itself into two new versions
What does each chromosome need?
A full set of DNA (two strands are needed for DNA set to be complete)
What are the steps in the replication process?
- DNA gets split by enzymes (leading + lagging strings)
- Other enzymes start to create complimentary strands
- DNA is finished copying two complete sets of DNA
- Every chromosome must be copied to make a full cell
