DMT Lecture Slides Flashcards
what is the street name of DMT?
business mans LCD
where is the alkaloid for DMT found?
found in tree bark (mimosa hostilis) “business men drink mimosa’s “ ;)
- DMT is similar to?
- structurally similar too?
- functionally similar too?
- tryptophan amino acid
- serotonin (similar transport and enzymatic functions)
- Psylocibin (similar mechanism of action, SOA)
what is the structure - activity relationship ?
modification of structure = change in effectiveness or potency
what is the onset and duration of DMT?
15 min onset, 1 hour duration
what is the long standing debate about DMT?
may be endemic to human body / function
tryptamines are naturally synthesized into ?
serotonin
enzymes responsible for DMT is found where?
in humans but in our bodies and NOT in our brains
what is another debate and speculation of DMT?
debate: potential immune (stress) response signal
speculation: pineal gland and near death experience
- – wtf does this even mean
synthesis of DMT in what cells?
cancerous cells (observed in lab), --> greatly susceptible to enzymatic metabolism
facilitation of increased immune response in ? receptors
- problem?
endemic.
- treatment does not imply endemic origin (doesn’t mean this is how our body is using it)
is DMT an agonist or antagonist? and on what NT?
agonist. dopamine (related to sensation) and serotonin (related to perception)
dopamine is related to ? whereas serotonin is related to?
sensation, perception
describe stage 1 of DMT process
- what NT
- where
- time
- what
- dopamine
- insula
- 20-30 s
- auditory hallucinations. crackling, extending tone that increases in volume and pitch
describe stage 2 of DMT process
- what NT
- where
- time
- what
- dopamine
- amygdala
- 30-60 s
- “waiting room”, animated suspension, physiological “fear” response (but not fear) and a psychological “startle” response
describe stage 3 of DMT process
- what NT
- where
- time
- what
- serotonin
- prefrontal cortex
- 1 - 5 min
- DMT hyperspace, “other side”, some pp;l see themselves as transformers. machine elves: presence of human like half organic half technology beings, may speak different languages that are understandable.
intake of DMT
mostly inhalation and injection
what is the problem with ingestion?
MAO (enzyme) deactivates/breaks down DMT molecule in the liver, so you need a MAO inhibitor quickly, but this is hard to get
what is the solution to the problem with ingestion?
ayhausca: brew which includes plant derived DMT and harmine/harmaline/tetradroharmine (MAO-I)
what does ayhausca result in?
- longer highs (3-6 hours)
- similar experince to psilocybin but more intense (lesser than LSD but may include synaesthesia)
- “la purga” : intense vomiting/ diahrea
- no dietary restrictions (only acts on MAO-I)
explain tolerance of DMT
- debate between is there is none or acute
- cycle of high may interfere with perception of tolerance
- short duration may facilitate tolerance
what is the onset offset of SDMT
- onset rapid, offset 1 hour
serotonin sit right on the receptor and then comes right off, so it is a very short experience, even you become tolerant to LSD you will not become tolerant to DMT, unless DMT is affecting something else we are not aware of
–> what is this explaining
cross tolerance (didn’t know how to make this question but thought it was important kinda)
is there cross tolerance?
no cross tolerance to LSD, but LSD cross tolerance with DMT
is there dependence?
no observable physical dependence
- psychological still in debate
explain the therapeutic effects of DMT
“the hoasca project”
ayahuasca decreased frequencies of psychiatric symptoms among adolescents in an religious context. may reflect a protective effect due to their religious affiliation
–> 7 x lower incidence of anxiety and body dysmorphia and attention
explain the therapeutic effects of DMT
“insight orientated psychotherapy”
- behavioural/ cognitive restructuring
- -> in PTSD, phobia and anxiety: rationalization, removing/changing the emotional component
- -> in depressiona and addiction: therapeutic insight, fears, beliefs, motives, desires
using hoasca
what brain areas are involved in therapeutic insight orientated psychotherapy
frontal lobe (perception/reasoning), insula (emotion/cognition), amygdala (negative emotional processing)
what does DMT do in insight orientated psychotherapy?
brings forth the traumatic experience, elicits multiplicity of perspectives/ perception, hyperactivation allows for hebbian synapse to form for new interpretation
