16
Q

tinnitus and hearing loss is associated with vestibular neuritis true/false

A

false- there is no assoc tinnitus or hearing loss with vestibular neuritis

17
Q

what codition is similar to vestibular neuritis but it does have assoc tinnitus and hearing loss?

A

labyrinthitis

18
Q

how does labyrinthitis present?

A

sudden onset that graudually gets better

19
Q

what is the treatment for vestibular neuritis and labyrinthitis?

A

supportive with vestibular sedatives

generally self limiting

20
Q

what can be given for pateitns with vestibular neuritis/labyrinthitis that are vomiting?

A

buccal meds (buccostem)

cyclozine

21
Q

what is menieres disease?

A

progressive deafness with tinnitus and vertigo

22
Q

what is th ecriteria to diagnose menieres?

A

room spinning + vomiting

usually tinnitus + LOH before episode

lasts around 30mins

[all have to vhange at same time]

23
Q

how does menieres affect you over time (years)?

A

destroys hearing and balance

24
Q

what investigation should always be carried out in suspicion of menieres?

A

MRI for intrancranial lesion of schwannoma

25
Q

what is the management of menieres?

A

buccostem during attack (vomiting)

hearing aids/therapy (tinnitus)

26
Q

what is thoughtto be the mechanism behind menieres?

A

thought that membrane between peri and endolymph is broken every attack and the two fluids mix

n.b- due to diff in salt conc of two fluids thought that salt restricted diet could be benificial

27
Q

what is a meniette?

A

device used in menieres that gives pulsed pressure into the ear canal- grommet insertion allows it to flow through

28
Q

how can gentamicin injection be useful in menieres?

A

giving gentamicin injection will result in you losing sense of balance- if you have no balance you cannot suffer from an attack
