Divisions of the pharynx Flashcards
Where is the nasopharynx located?
- Above soft palate.
- from choanae to the posterior wall of the superior constrictor.
- auditory tube opens in postero-lateral aspect
- -orfice reinforced by cartilage, torus tubarius
- Salpingopharyngeal fold raised by salpingopharyngeus m.
- levator palatini
- Pharyngeal recess
What is the function of levator palatini?
Raises ridge seemingly coming out of the of the orfice of auditory tube
- Works in conjunction with tensor palatini which lies posterior to the margin of the medial pterygoid plate.
- Together they tens soft palate and seal Naso from oropharynx during swallowing preventing constrictors from forcing bolus into nasal cavity
What is the pharyngeal recess site of?
located posterior to the torus and is the site of pharyngeal tonsils (Adenoids)
-guards junction of nasal cavity and gut
Oropharynx Boundaries and location
Soft palate to level of hyoid.
-Found from palatoglossal folds (Palatoglossal arch) to constrictors posteriorly.
Palatine tonsils are:
In hollow immediately post to palatoglossal fold and anterior to palatopharyngeal fold (Pouch between 2nd and 3rd arch)
-Guards function between oral cavity and gut
Sulcus terminals and foramen caecum set boundaries to?
the anterior 2/3 of the tongue and posterior 1/3 or the separation of the oral cavity from the gut.
-The nerve supply to tongue changes here; voluntary to involuntary control occurs here for example gag reflex is initiated posterior to this line.
Lingular tonsils (lingual follicles) is found on?
found on the posterior 1/3 of the tongue
it forms the floor of the ring of lymphoid tissue guarding junction of the oral-nasal cavities of the gut
Laryngopharynx is the pharynx from and to what:
From hyoid to lower border of cricoid
-lateral and posterior to the larynx
What is the piriform recess?
Its the channel between middle and inferior constrictors of lateral walls of larynx
-Its a channel for saliva (Maybe be only channel for food and fluids in animals with epiglottis extending into the nasopharynx.
