DIVERSITY OF LIVING AND NON LIVING THINGS Flashcards
Living vs. Non-Living
Living things are organisms that have biological processes, such as growth, reproduction, and response to stimuli. Non-living things are objects or substances that lack these biological processes and characteristics.
Life Processes in living things
Life processes are essential activities performed by living organisms to maintain life. They include
MOVEMENT:(changing position),
NUTRITION:(obtaining and using food)
GROWTH:increasing in size),
RESPIRATION:(obtaining energy from food), EXCRETION:removing waste),
REPRODUCTION:producing offspring), and response to stimuli (reacting to changes in the environment).
Basic Life Processes in living things
The five basic life processes that unite all living organisms are:
1. Nutrition: The process of obtaining and using nutrients for energy and growth.
2. Respiration: The process of releasing energy from nutrients to fuel cellular activities.
3. Excretion: The removal of waste products produced during metabolic processes.
4. Growth: The increase in size or complexity of an organism over time.
5. Reproduction: The process of producing offspring to ensure the continuation of the species.
Biodiversity
Biodiversity refers to the variety of life forms present on Earth, including genetic diversity within species, diversity between species, and diversity of ecosystems.
