provides Britain with a discrimination law, protects people from being treated unfairly
9 protected characteristics
duty to make reasonable adjustments if someone placed at substantial disadvantage because of a disability:
- change way things are done (provision, criterion, practice)
- provide auxiliary aids or services (i.e. extra staff assistance)
- change a physical feature of a premises
( doesn’t require structural changes)
the duty applies to the “controller” of the premises i.e. landlord or agent
disability defined as “a physical or mental impairment with substantial and long-term adverse effect on ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities”

What are the 9 protected characteristics under the Equality Act 2010?
- age
- disability
- gender reassignment
- marriage or civil partnership (employment only)
- pregnancy and maternity
- race
- religion or belief
- sex
- sexual orientation
and protects “discrimination by association” i.e. if your son is gay
and protects you if you’ve complained about discrimination/stood up for discrimination rights
What is the public sector equality duty under the Equality Act 2010? How do you apply it?
purpose:
- to integrate consideration of equality and good relations into design of policies and delivery of services inc internal policies
3 aims:
- eliminate unlawful discrimination
- advance equality of opportunity between ppl with a protected characteristic and not
- foster good relations between them

What is a RACI matrix?
The RACI matrix is a responsibility assignment chart that maps out every task, milestone or key decision involved in completing a project and assigns which roles are Responsible for each action item, which personnel are Accountable, and, where appropriate, who needs to be Consulted or Informed.
What is an Access statement?
A design and access (DAS) statement is a short report accompanying and supporting a planning application. They provide a framework for applicants to explain how a proposed development is a suitable response to the site and its setting, and demonstrate that it can be adequately accessed by prospective users.
A DAS is required with planning applications for major development – both full and outline. Lower thresholds apply in conservation areas and World Heritage Sites, where some smaller applications must also be accompanied by a DAS. Listed building consent applications must also include a DAS.
