What is cultural safety?
Using cultural humility, police can create an environment in which individuals feel safe and respected to be themselves and express cultural identities.
What is cultural humility?
Recognising one’s own limitations and biases when interacting with people from diverse cultural backgrounds. It’s asking questions with a humble and respectful attitude. “I am curious about who you are”.
What is cultural diversity and how does it relate to policing?
Culture is a way of life of a group of people in which makes them a recognisable group in society.
Diversity is understanding that each individual is unique with individual differences.
NZ is culturally diverse with a population of many different individuals from different values, lives and beliefs. It is critical for police to not only reflect the public in its cultural diversity but also have the knowledge on how to keep each of these different groups of people protected in a culturally safe way.
