Indication?
A
post alcohol detoxification with informed consent, extensive education and ideally a reliable support in the community (spouse or friend)

MOA?
A
inhibits normal alcohol metabolism (acetylaldehyde dehydrogenase) resulting in sudden acetylaldehyde build up causing nausea, vomiting, headache, flushing, tachycardia and hypertension

Contraindications?
A
1) cardiovascular disease
2) non compliant clients
3) liver failure

Q
What monitoring is required?
A
3 - 6 monthly LFTs

Q
dosing?
A
100mg daily for 1-2 weeks
then 200mg daily maintenance
Maximum 300mg daily
