Militarism- a nation’s policy of building up their military
Alliances- an agreement b/w nations w/ common goals
Imperialism- a stronger country takes control of weaker country (Europe competes to control and Africa and resources, spheres of influence)
Nationalism- devotion to or pride in one’s nation
assassination of Archduke Ferdinand (heir to Austria-Hungary throne)
Causes of the Spanish American War
- Yellow Journalism- biased writing used to get people to buy newspapers; get readers to believe something
- Sinking of the U.S.S. Maine- US newspapers blame Spanish; Americans angered at attack
- De Lome Letter- Spanish Minister criticized president
Isolation vs. Imperialism
Isolationism- strict non-involvement in the affairs of other nations
Imperialism- extending power by acquiring territory around the globe or exploiting weaker nations to serve nations interests
Big Stick Diplomacy
Teddy Roosevelt- came from a west African proverb that said “speak softly and carry a big stick”. This meant to negotiate with strength, making it clear that military action was a possibility, if needed
