Distribution Of Means Flashcards
Can u use the regular z formula when hypothesis testing with samples?
No because we want to compare a sample to a population not just one score
What do we want to decide about a sample from a population
Whether it belongs to or the probability it has come from the population
What is a sampling error
Any one sample will not exactly tell us the mean of a population
What is sampling variability?
No two samples from a population will have exactly the same M or SD
Do we want sampling variability?
No
How can we minimise sampling variability?
By using a largest sample size
Is the mean of the distribution of means the same as the population mean?
Yes
Is a specific sample mean the same as a population mean?
No
What can make the mean of the distribution of means closer to the population mean?
The greater the number of sample means that are drawn
What is om2
Variance of the distribution of means
What is o2
Variance of the population
What is n
Number of scores in each sample
What is the standard error of the main?
The standard deviation of the distribution of means
What does standard error show?
How much variability our sample mean would have around the true population mean
What is oM
Standard error
What happens when N increases?
There is a decrease in error
That can also be an increase in power
What is a point estimate
A calculation where a sample statistic is used to estimate an unknown population parameter
What is the confidence interval
An estimate of a range of possible means that are likely to include the population mean
What are the confidence limits
The upper and lower ends of the confidence interval
What is Zm
Z calculation used for samples bigger than 1
