Distinctive Landscapes CS- UK coastal landscape Flashcards
UK coastal landscape case study
swanage (jurassic coast of dorset)
what landforms can be found at Old Harry’s rocks?
caves, arches, stacks and stumps
what lanform can be found at lulworth?
cove
how is a cove formed?
a layer of softer rock parallel to the coast is eroded outwards as it is easier to erode than the harder rock at the narrow opening
what is a cove?
a horse shoe shaped opening in the coast wich is narrow at its mouth but wider at its back
what are groynes and how do they work?
- wood or stone barriers across the beach
- prevent the natural process of longshore drift
evaluate the effectiveness of groynes
- maintaining the beach helps to protect the coast behind
- effective
- lasts
- may cause problems along the coast due to sediment starvation
- expensive
- unattractive
how do sea walls work?
they protect the cliffs behind from the waves by absorbing and deflecting their energy which prevents the natural process of erosion
how does rip rap work?
- a barrier of concrete blocks or hard rocks like granite protect the coast behind by absorbing wave energy which prevents the natural process of erosion
evaluate effectiveness of rip rap
- looks natural
- increases habitats
- cheaper in short term
- hard to maintain
- more expensive in long run
