Dissection 2 Flashcards
What 2 lines define the quadrants of the gluteal region?
Greater trochanter to PSIS extended from the midpoint of the iliac crest
Name the superficial muscles of the gluteal region
Gluteus maximus
Gluteus minimus
Gluteus medius
Gluteus maximus proximal attachments
Iliac crest, sacrum, sacrotuberous ligament, coccyx
Gluteus maximum distal attachment
Iliotibial tract
Gluteus maximus action
(Most powerful) extensor of the hip
Attchments of gluteus medius and gluteus minimus
Posterior gluteal aspect of the ilium
Anterolateral aspect of the greater trochanter of the femur
Gluteus medius and minimus actions
Abduct and medially (internally) rotate the thigh at the hip joint
Nerve supply to the superficial muscles
Gluteus maximum = Inferior gluteal neurovascular bundle
Gluteus Medius & Minimus = superior neurovascular bundle
Describe the deep muscle layer of the gluteal region
Piriformis Lateral (external) rotators of the hip Small muscles run transversely between sacrum, ilium, ischial spine & tuberosity medially and greater trochanter of the femur laterally
What is the iliotibial tract?
Thickening of the deep fascia of the thigh
Pudendal nerve:
Spinal roots & course
S2-S4
Forms in the sacral plexus & emerges into the middle of the gluteal region & supplies the muscles, skin & fascia of the perineum
Sciatic nerve:
Spinal roots & course
L4 -S3
Forms in the lumbo sacral plexus & emerges into middle of gluteal region and goes to the posterior compartment of thigh and branches into common fibular and tibial
Posterior cutaneous nerve of the thigh:
Spinal roots & course
S1-S3
Forms in sacral plexus & emerges into middle of gluteal region & supplies skin over posterior aspect of the thigh
