Disruption Of Attachments Flashcards
What’s privation?
This is when a child has never be able to form attachment relationships
Name 2 studies which can be used for deprivation
- Bowlbys juvenile thieves
2. Robertson and Robertson -Children brief separation
Explain Bowlbys Juvenile thieves
Took 88 5-16 year olds who had been referred to a children guidance clinic and interview the families and children. Most children had experienced seperaton. So this Found that deprivation in its worst form can lead to affection less psychopathy and in its less sever form it can lead to antisocial behaviour.
Explain Robertson and Robertson study on John
Mum left him with no substitute care for 9 days. John ended clinging onto a teddy bear. John became more withdrawing and despairing. When his mother came to get him he tried to get away from her. He continued to show to show outbursts of anger after for months
Explain Robertson and Robertson study for several other children who had substitute care
Joyce Robertson looked after the kids and were able to see their mother in hospital. These children ate and slept well and were welcomed their parents back at the end of their stay
Bowlbys study showed
Children deprived of a loving attachment can lead to later problems in life
Robertson and Robertson showed
Deprivation can be avoided if good substitute care is provided
Strengths of deprivation studies
- Natural observation so validity would of been high as observer can’t interfere
- Natural environment so high ecological validity
Weakness of studies into deprivation
Lacks cultural variation as all children were white and British
Name the studies into privation
- Hodges and Tizard
- Rutter
Can mention Czech twins and Genie but don’t truly represent privation
Explain hodges and tizards study into privation
Longitudinal study about 65 children who had been placed in a institution. 36 went to or back to a home by the age of 4. What they found was that adopted children formed strong attachments unlike the restored children. Both did though see adult attention and less peer relations
Evaluate Hodges and Tizards study
- Longitudinal study so high validity
2. High attrition rates
Explain Rutters study on Romanian orphans
Rutter looked at 111 orphans adopted in the UK by the age of 2. By 4 they had caught up with age related milestones. What was found tho was the higher age of adoption the slower their progress was. Therefore shows affects of Privation are less severe than before
Evaluation of Rutters study
- High attrition rates
- Might be parents not privation
- Don’t know long term affects of privation
What’s deprivation?
When you have a loss of an attachment relationship . This is when a child losses their primary care giver for a certain period of time
