what is consciousness
state of awareness of self and environment that requires alaterness and arousal
what is arousal vs awareness
arousal: level of consioucness
awareness: content of consiouscness
what is a vegetative state
-return of sleep-wake cycle with periodic eye opening
-may moan
-may cry of smile or make other facial expresions without cause
-may move eyes toward things
-unable to follow instrcutions
-may react to loud sounds
-no speech
-no evidence of response to stimuli
what is unresponsive wakefulness syndrome
-shift in language to describe vegetative state
-perceived as less negative connotation
-demonstatres wakefullnesss but no voluntary motor responeses
-can be transient or permanent
what is a minimally conscious state
-sometimes follows instruction
-may communicate yes or no
-may speak some understandable words
-may responsd to people or things
-people with this do things inconsistently which makes it hard to distinguish between VS and MCS
what are the indicators of emergence
-functional object use AND/OR functional accurate communication
