What is the dentists role in childhood screening?
Checking the Childs vaccination history
Providing health promotion
Why are childhood vaccinations given?
To prevent infectious diseases where the risk of the vaccine is less than the risk of disease
To reduce an infectious disease within a community by reducing the number of susceptible vectors (herd immunity)
What vaccinations are given to mothers in pregnancy to protect the baby?
the whooping cough vaccine
MMR (before or after baby is born)
What vaccinations are given to babies at 2-4 months?
6 in 1 - dip, tet, WC, polio, heb B and others
MenB - meningitis and septicaemia
Rotavirus
Pneumococcal
What vaccinations are given to babies at 12/13 months (within 1 month from their bday) ?
Hib/Men C
Men B
MMR

What vaccines are not routinely given to babies?
BCG - only given to babies who are cared for by family members who have travelled from a country with a TB endemic/live with a family member with TB.
Hep B
Why would parent opt to not vaccinate their children?
religious/philosophical reasons
Some believe it is an assault - don’t want the child to be in pain
Some believe that the benefits don’t outweigh the risks
What is our role as the dentist when faced with families who won’t vaccinate their children?
identify and discuss with the healthcare visitor
investigate whether the child is being put at risk/neglected in other ways
does it warrant public health intervention
