Diseases and Conditions of the EYE Flashcards
Cataract
clouding of the lens from abnormal protein deposits
Diabetic Retinopathy
ruptured capillaries inside of eye from untreated diabetes that can result in progressive vision loss
Ectropion
eversion of the eyelid (turns outward)
Entropion
inversion of the eyelid
Glaucoma
a disease where intraocular pressure causes damage to retina and optic nerve if left untreated; idiopathic
Hordeolum
(sty) inflammation of an oil gland in eyelid
Macular Degeneration
Progressive, age related deterioration of the macula
Retractive Disorders
disorders from irregularly shaped cornea or lens that affects the way light enters the eye and also shape the eye
Astigmatism
defective curvature of cornea producing blurred vision
Hyperogia
condition of shortened eyeball shaped results in farsightedness. Can;t see up close
Myopia
condition of elongated eyeball shape results in nearsightedness
Presbyopia
farsightedness in old people from reduced elasticity in lens
Retinal Detachment
Emergency condition of eye which the retina spontaneously pulls away from the choroid layer of blood vessels. Blindness will occur if not repaired
Strabismus
misalignment of eyes due to muscle weakness. Crossed eyes
Acoustic Neuroma
Benign tumor that grows on Auditory Nerve; results in hearing loss, ringing in ear, and balance problems
Choelesteatoma
A cyst in the middle ear consisting of skin cells and cerumen. Can damage ossicles without tx
Conductive deafness
Hearing impairment resulting from inadequate sound-wave conduction from the outer ear to the ossicles of the middle ear
Nerve deafness
Deafness from damage to the cochlea or the auditory nerve.
Impacted cerumen
Earwax inside the ear that can lead to infection or hearing loss.
Ménière’s disease
Back up of fluid in cochlea and canals producing vertigo
Vertigo
dizziness
Tinnitus
ringing in the ears
Otitis Media
“ear infection” tx is antibiotic or possibly “tubes”
Ishihara Color Vision test
check for color blindness
Visual Acuity Test
snellen test/chart
Visual Field Test
H in space
Audiometry
headphones with beep test
LASIK
(Laser in situ keratotomy) laser correction of refractive disorders
Opthalmoscope
instrument used to see inside eye
Otorhinolaryngologist
ENT ear, nose, and throat dr.
Ageusia
absence of sense of taste
Anosmia
absence of the sense of smell
Dysgeusia
Condition where sense of taste is impaired resulting in either an unpleasant taste sensation, or the perception of a taste sensation.
Hyperosmia
An abnormally heightened sense of smell.
Hyposmia
An abnormally weakened sense of smell.
Neuropathy
A disease of the nerves that involves pain or loss of sensation
