Disease Spread Flashcards
What is infectivity ?
The ability for a pathogen to enter and replicate in a host
What is pathogenicity?
The ability for a pathogen to cause disease in a host
What is virulence?
The extent of disease an agent can cause in a host
What is minimally infective dose?
The amount of pathogen that is required to establish an infection
What is a communicable disease?
An infectious disease that’s transmissible by direct contact with an affected individual or the individual’s discharges or indirectly via a vector
What is transmission?
The process by which an infectious agent passes from an infected host to a susceptible host
What is transmissibility?
The ability of an infectious agent to pass from an infected host to a susceptible host
What is a reservoir of disease?
A location where an infectious agent can survive and multiply
What is zoonosis?
An infection that is transmissible under natural conditions from vertebrate animals to humans
What is the latent period?
The time between pathogenic exposure and being infectious
What is the infectious period?
The time from becoming infectious to becoming non-infectious
What is the incubation period of infection?
The time between pathogenic exposure and symptom onset
