What is Discourse Structure?
A
Way in which texts are organised into coherent wholes.

What is Coherence?
A
How a whole discourse can make sense, e.g. does it have a logical order, is it easy to understand, is it appropriately organised, e.t.c.

What is Cohesion?
A
- How elements of a discourse ‘Stick Together’, e.g. the formal linguistic features.
- Standard use of grammar, sentence structures, conjunctions, connectives, repetition, e.t.c.

What are common discourse features in written texts?
A
- Lists/Instructions- logical progression through stages, use imperative verbs to instruct, guide, e.g. recipes, guides
- Problem/Solution- Identifies problem, e.g. product advertisement
- Analysis- Breaks down key ideas into constituent parts, evaluates and explores, e.g. academic articles, newspapers, editorials.
- Narrative- Details series of events (chronological or non-chronological) e.g. Novels, Witness Accounts.

What is Graphology?
A
- Concerned with visual elements of a text, both verbal and non-verbal, e.g. shape, image, colour, space and typography.

What is Typography?
A
Font type, size, colour, emboldening, italicisation, underlining and any other modification to font type.

What is a Cultural Model?
A
Organisational structure based on shared and agreed criteria by groups of people within a society.

What are Iconic and Symbolic Signs?
A
- Iconic Signs- direct picture of thing it represents. Tend to offer a straightforward representation of what they stand for.
- Symbolic Signs- draw an association or connotation usually based on existing cultural models.
