Describe the main points of the medical model of disability
- Disabled person is disabled by their abnormalities.
- Is abnormal and should be fixed
- Needs help from other people who make decisions for them
- Should adjust to fit into society (because they are the not normal ones)
Describe the main points of the social model of disability
- Is disabled by society
- Is ‘normal
- Has the right to autonomy
- Should be supported by society and have a right to inclusion
Disability definition
The interaction between people with impairments and the societal attitudinal and environmental barriers that hinder their full and effective participation in society on an equal basis with others
Define equality, equity and liberation
Equality = Everyone given the same help – doesn’t work for all
Equity = Each individual is given help needed to achieve the same outcome, support is individualised
Liberation = The ideal, no one needs support as barrier is removed
Describe and give examples of identity first language
Social model of disability prefers this way: autistic person, disabled person etc.
Describe and give examples of person first language
Inclusive approach to value as a person rather than by impairments: person with stroke, person with disability

What is the optional protocal
Where a disabled person who believes that their rights have been breached can make a complaint to the UN Rights of Persons with Disabilities Committee
Describe the non-discrimination right and the potential loophole around it
Everyone is entitled to equal protection and benefit of the law without discrimination
Discrimination on the basis of disability is prohibited
Ensure that reasonable accommodation is provided – HOWEVER this leads to loopholes as service providers need to make their service available to disabled people without making it an undue burden on the service, so services claim it is too much of a burden when in reality it isn’t.
Describe the accessibility right
Ensure persons with disabilities live independently and participate fully in all aspects of their lives, measures should be taken to ensure equal access.
Describe participation and inclusion right
Everyone has the right to equal participation and inclusion in all aspects of society – such as:
- Cultural activities
- Politics
- Recreation, leisure and sport
- Independent living
- Access to support services
- Education
- Work and employment
