the propulsion of food along the GI tract
what is segmentation?
alternating ring-like, evenly spaced/ localized contractions in the small intestine
- it mixes chyme, bile acids and intestinal secretions
What is mass peristalisis?

What are Peyer’s patches?
Aggregated lymphoid follicles at the end of the small intestine
How is surface area increased to aid with absorption in the small intestine?
- circular folds
- Villi
- Microvilli
Disaccharide + Enzyme = Monosaccharides is the equation for what?
the digestion of carbohydrates
What does it mean by the pancreas is dual action?
it features both exocrine and endocrine glands
What does the Gallbladder do?
stores and concentrates Bile
What does Bile do ?
it is used for emulsification and absorption of lipids, cholesterol, phospholipids and lipoproteins in the small intestine
What is the Large intestine lined with ?
simple columnar epithelium with mucus secreting goblet cells
What are the 3 main functions of the large intestine?
- reabsorb water and electrolytes from indigestible food materials
- Absorb vitamin B and K
- Eliminate undigested residues
