Digestive System Part 2 - The parts of the digestive system Flashcards
Explain the basic process food takes from the mouth to the anus.
- Food enters the mouth.
- Food is broken down by teeth and saliva.
- Food moves down the oesophagus via peristalsis.
- Food enters the stomach.
- Food starts getting digested in the stomach via enzymes.
- Food enters the small intestine and gets broken down even further. Bile neutralises the stomach acid.
- Fibre and water enter the large intestine and combine with bacteria to make faeces.
- Faeces are stored in the rectum.
- Faeces are excreted via the anus to the outside world.
What is the anus?
The opening at the end of the digestive system from which faeces (poo) leaves the body
What is the oesophagus?
The long tube between the mouth and the stomach.
What is the gall bladder?
Small sac below the liver that stores and releases bile into the small intestine.
What is the large intestine?
The shorter, wider tube that follows the small intestine.
What is the liver?
Large organ which makes bile that neutralises stomach acid.
What is the mouth?
The first part of the digestive system, where food enters the body.
What is the pancreas?
Gland below the stomach which makes lots of chemicals called enzymes that help break down food.
What is the rectum?
The lower part of the large intestine where faeces (poo) is stored before it leaves the body.
What is the small intestine?
The long, thin winding tube that food goes through after it leaves the stomach.
What is the stomach?
A sack-like, muscular organ that is attached to the oesophagus. When food enters the stomach, it is churned with lots of acid.
