Digestive system Flashcards
Ingestion
Taking in of substances
Mechanical digestion
Breaking down of food into smaller pieces without any chemical change to the food mol.
Chemical digestion
The breakdown of large insoluble molecules into smaller soluble ones
Absorption
Movement of smaller molecules and ions through small intesine into the blood
Assimilation
the movement of digested food molecules into the cells of the body where they are used, becoming part of the cells
Egestion
he passing out of food that has not been digested or absorbed, as faeces, through the anus
What is the function of the mouth
- Mechanical digestion
- Teeth chew food the break it into smaller sized peices
- amylaze in the mouth starts to digest the starch into maltose
- Food is shaped into a bolus by tongue and then swallowed
What is the function of the easophagus
- Tube that connects mouth to the stomach
- Perastalisis takes place pushing food down
What is the function of the Small Intestine
- first section is called duodenum where in pancreatic juice and the digested food comes out of the stomach and the pancreatic juice is also secreted from the pancreas
- Ph of small intestine is slightly basic
- The second section is called the Ileum this is where the absorption occurs as it is long and lined with villi
What is the function of the large intestine
- Water is absorbed by remaining material in colon, to produce faeces
- faeces is stored in rectum and removed by the anus
What is the function of the pancreas
- Produce all 3 types of enzymes: Protease, lipase and amylase
- ## Secretes alkaline fluid into duodenum for digestion to raise ph fluid coming out of the liver
What is the function of the liver
- Produces bile to help in the emulsification of fats break down large fat droplet into smaller ones
- Deamination (produces Urea)
Gall Bladder
Store bile to release into the duodenum as required
Physical Digestion examples
It is mainly carried out by the chewing action of the teeth, the churning action of the stomach and the emulsification of fats by bile in the duodenum
What is the function of the teeth
- Used for chewing to increase the surface area, so that it can be exposed to juices and other digestive enzymes so food can get broken down more quickly
