Digestive enzymes Flashcards
What do enzymes do in chemical reactions?
Enzymes are used to catalyse chemical reactions
What are enzymes made of?
Enzymes are large protein molecules
What is the active site in an enzyme?
Where substrate attaches to
Why is the active site a specific shape?
So, the substrate can fit
What is the theory that says enzymes are specific?
The lock and key theory
What is protein broken down by?
Protease
Where can you find protease?
In the stomach, pancreas and small intestine
Where is protease produced?
The stomach and pancreas
What are proteins made from?
Long chains of chemicals called amino acids
What happens to the proteins when they are broken down?
They are converted back to their individual amino acids which can then be absorbed into the bloodstream
What happens to the amino acids once they are absorbed by the human body?
They are reordered to make human proteins
What is starch made from?
A chain of glucose molecules
What enzyme is used to breakdown starch?
Amylase
What is produced when we absorb starch?
Simple sugars
Where is amylase made?
The salivary glands and pancreas
