Absorption in the small intestine Flashcards
1
Q
How is the small intestine adapted for absorption?
A
It is around 5m long which provides a very large surface area for the absorption of the products of digestion
Also, the inside of the small intestine is covered in villi which massively increase the surface area for absorption
Also, villi have a very good blood supply which means the blood stream rapidly removes the products of digestion and increases the concentration gradient
Also the villi have a thin membrane which ensures a short diffusion path
