Arteries, veins and capillaries Flashcards
1
Q
What do arteries do?
A
⦁ Carry very high-pressure blood from the heart
2
Q
What adaptations do arteries have
A
⦁ Very thick muscular walls to allow to withstand the high-pressure blood
⦁ Elastic fibres to stretch when surge of blood passes through
3
Q
What do capillaries do?
A
⦁ Allow oxygen and glucose to dfiffuse into cells
⦁ CO2 from cells diffuses into them
4
Q
What are adaptations of capillaries?
A
⦁ Have very thin walls which shortens the diffusion pathway
5
Q
What do veins do?
A
⦁ Transport blood back to the heart
6
Q
What are adaptations of veins?
A
⦁ Thin walls because blood it at low pressure
⦁ Contain valves to stop backflow because blood is so low pressure
