Digestion process Flashcards
1
Q
Carbohydrates digestion process
A
- Salivary amylase - digestion in the mouth
- In the stomach it is mixed with acid
- In the duodenum - pancreatic amylase
- Disaccharidease - in the intestine - digest disaccharides
2
Q
Transport of glucose across the intestinal membrane
A
- Na+ gradient established by sodium-potassium pump
2.Glucose is absorbed with Na+ - glucose moves out of the intestinal epithelial cells by facilitated diffusion
- glucose enters the capillaries of the intestinal villi and is taken to the liver
3
Q
Carbohydrates in the liver
A
converted to glucose
4
Q
Enzymes that digest lipids
A
lipase - secreted by the pancreas
5
Q
Emulsification
A
the dispersal of a liquid inside another liquid. For example: large lipids in bile salts
6
Q
Intestinal transport of lipids
A
- Bile salts aggregate around digested lipids to form micelles
- Micelle connects to the epithelial cells so the lipids can pass into the intestinal cells
- triglycerides are made and other lipids are packaged in a protein coat and become a chylomicron
- Leave the cell, pass the capillary into the lactal of the lymphatic system
- Lymphatic system takes the chylomicron to the liver
7
Q
Liver and lipids
A
- Storage
- conversion
- use as energy
8
Q
Enzymes on proteins
A
Pepsin - in the stomach
Trypsin - in the small intestine
peptidases - in the small intestine after trypsin
9
Q
Protein absorbtion
A
- Cotransport with Na+
- Move into blood capillaries and carried to the liver
