Digestion Objective #4 & Notes 4_11 Flashcards
Carbohydrate digestion begins…
in the MOUTH with salivary amylase
swallowing is orchestrated by….
- the swallowing center in the medulla
- there is a precise sequence that occurs during swallowing
Describe carbohydrate digestion in the mouth (what enzyme?)
amylase
Describe swallowing - oropharyngeal stage (in mouth and pharynx)
-takes 1 second
- > larynx covered by epiglottis
- > vocal cords come together & close opening between them
- > respirations are inhibited (keeps food out)
how does food stay out of respiratory tract?
- > larynx covered by epiglottis
- > vocal cords come together & close opening between them
- > respirations are inhibited
why can you swallow while standing on your head?
-bc the peristaltic wave (not gravity)
describe secondary peristaltic waves…
-distension or enlargement triggers secondary peristaltic wave or waves until it does
describe heartburn…
-occurs when gastric contents (acidic) splash into esophagus & irritates it
Describe swallowing - esophageal stage (in esophagus)
->Bolus passes upper esophageal sphincter
(now in esophagus)
->peristalsis moves the bolus into stomach
How much do the pharynx & the esophagus contribute to digestion?
- 0…not at all
- bc dont secrete enzymes
- act as passageways
define epiglotis
- part of larynx
- acts as lid
peristalsis
circular muscle layer of smooth muscle layer of GI tract contracts
