Digestion And Metbolism Flashcards
What is metabolism?
The sum of all the chemical reactions that take place in the body.
Is glucose the only fuel that can be used for cellular respiration?
No organic molecules such as:
Protein, fats, sucrose, & other disaccharides & starch can be used
What does nutrition involve?
- Food being taken in, taken apart and taken up by an organism
- animals must consume food for energy
- animals must balance consumption, storage and food use.
Food processing
IDEA**e and a swapped
•Ingestion:
act of eating food(voluntary)
•Digestion:
Breaking down food into smaller molecules that can be absorbed.
-mechanical=breaks food into smaller pieces.(increases surface area)
-chemical=processes digested materials into usable forms using enzymes
•Absorption:
Cells take up small molecules
Small molecules move into blood
•Egestion: releases undigested material
Digestive compartments
•intercellularly:
Food vacuoles
- Food is engulfed through phagocytosis
- Food molecules fuse with lysosomes containing hydrolytic enzymes
- Digestion occurs
•extracellularly:
Allows bigger molecules to be digested via organelles that are continuous with outside.
Chylomicrons
Water soluble globules that transport triglycerides to the blood through lymphatic system.
Lacteal
A vessel found at the core of each villus.
Part of lymphatic system
Cecum
Ferments ingested material
*hence herbivores have larger cecum
