diffusion - Biology Flashcards
define isotonic
the particles in a cell and a beaker are the same
define hypertonic
more water is in the cell therefore it will move out the cell into the beaker
define hypotonic
more water is in the beaker and therefore would diffuse into the cell
define osmosis
the diffusion of particles from a high concentrated area of water to a low concentrated area of water through a partially permeable membrane
what 4 things effect the rate of diffusion
Temperature, concentration, surface area, distance (thickness)
where are embryonic stem cells found
found in the embryos in the early stages of the foetus
where are adult stem cells found
throughout the body
where are meristem cells found
in the ‘hands’ and ‘feet’ in the plant
what is stage 2 of copying a cell and what does it do
mitosis, the organs of cell are rearranged
what is stage 1 of copying a cell and what does it do
replication, all of the organelles and genetic information are copied
what is stage 3 of copying a cell and what does it do
division, the mother cell splits into 2 identical daughter cells
what is the equation to work out the magnification of a microscope
magnification = size of image / size of real object
