Diffusion And Osmosis Flashcards
Diffusion
The movement of molecules from a region of high concentration to low
Osmosis
Movement of water across a semi permeable membrane from a region of high water concentration to low
Passive transport
Doesn’t require energy
eg osmosis
Active transport
Movement of molecules against a concentration gradient which requires energy
Osmoregulation
Control or balance of water and salt levels in an organism
Plasmolysis
The loss of turgor pressure in a plant cell due to the loss of water by osmosis
Turgor pressure
Pressure of the cell contents (eg vacuole) against the cell wall
Turgid
A plant cell in which the contents are pushing against the cell wall due to turgor pressure
Osmosis and food prep
Food-> sugary/salty solution to preserve it
No bacteria/fungi can grow
Their cell surroundings have a higher solute conc. so water moves out of their cells by osmosis
Cells shrivel and die
Eg fish in salt, jam in sugar
Animal cell osmosis
More water outside than inside the cell-> water will emter cell -> burst and die
More water inside than outside-> water leave cell-> shrivel up may die
Plant cell osmosis in less concentrated solution
Water in-> vacuole fills & swells-> cytoplasm & vacuole give turgor pressure-> cell is turgid
Eg lettuce
Plant cell osmosis in more concentrated solution
Water out->vacuole &cytoplasm shrivel -> move away from cell membrane-> solution fills space >cell is flacid = plasmolysis
