diffusion and osmosis Flashcards
o2 and carbon dioxide:
02 diffuses in cell
carbon d diffuses out of cell
define concentration and diffusion:
molecules packed together
molecules move from a high c to a low c until equilibrium- equally spread out#
what does speed of diffusion depend on:
temp
speed
size of molecules
state of matter
distance
concentration gradient
example of a diffusion practical:
ammonia and hydrogen chloride
ammonia has smaller particle so diffuses faster in the tube rather than hydrogen chloride which diffuses slower as it has larger molecules so this forms a white cloudy substance towards the right side where the hydrogen chloride is known as ammonium chloride.
state of matters and diffusion:
solids-don’t as particles don’t freely move
liquids- diffuses slower
gases- diffuses faster
osmosis-
movement of water from an area of hc to an area of lc across a partially permeable membrane-tiny holes allowing it to pass thru but not large molecules
eg. cell membrane in our body
