diffusion Flashcards

1
Q

What are some Examples of simple diffusion

A

All particles are constantly in motion due to the kinetic energy that they poses
This motion is random with no set pattern to the way the particles move around
Particles are constantly bouncing off one another as well as off other objects for example the sides of the vessel which they are concentrated

Q

What is facilitated diffusion

A

It’s a passive process and it relies on the inbuilt motion, (kinetic energy) of the diffusing molecules. There is no external input of ATP for respiration. At specific points on the plasma membrane, there are special protein molecules. The two types are protein channels and carrier proteins.

Q

What are protein channels

A

Water filled hydrophilic channels across the membrane. They only allow specific water soluble ions to pass through. The channels are selective each opening in the presences of a specific ion. If the right ion is not present the protein won’t open. The ions bind with the protein causing it to change shape in a way that closes it to one side of the membrane and opens it to the other side.

Q

What’s are carrier proteins

A

When a molecule such as glucose that are specific to the protein is present, it binds with the protein. This causes it to change shape in such a way that the molecule is released to the inside of the membrane. This requires no external energy it moves form a high to low concentration using only kinetic energy from the molecule it’s self .
