differences in development Flashcards
detailed developed/developing/emerging titles, population pyramids
1
Q
4 key things about a developed country
A
- low fertility rate as women can CHOOSE not to have children or to have smaller families
- low death rates as people love to an old age because of healthcare access, good diet, sanitation etc (may rise because of ageing population)
- population structure (falling BR and DR leading to ageing population)
- maternal + infant mortality rates are low because of healthcare and follow up treatments available and free
2
Q
4 key things about an emerging country
A
- falling fertility rate as more wealthy people and attitudes towards large families change
- rapidly falling death rate as economic wealth brings more health service & improved living standards
- population structure
(life expectancy rising/birth + death rate dropping)
3
Q
4 key things about a developing country
A
- often high fertility rate but slight fall as education and contraception access improve
- death rate rising, life expectancy dropping because access to basic healthcare/sanitation is poor
- population structure= youthful population
- maternal + infant mortality rates high due to limited healthcare there
4
Q
what are the two main sections of a population pyramid
A
- economically active population –> tend to be working and dependable (20-64)
- dependent population –> old and young dependants rely on the active for economic support (0-19) and (65 - 85+)
5
Q
things to look out for on a pop pyramid
A
- wide base –> large number of children (rising BR)
narrow base –> small number of children (falling BR) - bulges –> immigrants/baby bloom
- higher pyramid –> longer people live
- indents –> show death rates higher than usual (war/famine/epidemic/emigration)
