environmental consequences of global inequalities
- developing countries have increased vulnerability to natural disasters
- poor farming practices lead to environmental degradation
- raw materials are exploited with limited economic benefit to developing countries & little concern for environment
social consequences of global inequalities
- +775 milli people in developing countries cannot read/write
- almost 1Bn people don’t have access to clean water
- 2.4Bn people don’t have access to basic sanitation
- many developing countries don’t have the ability to combat AIDs/HIV
political consequences of global inequalities
- some developing countries have non-democratic government or poorly functioning democracies (can worsen plight of minorities)
economic consequences of global inequalities
- 1/5 of the world’s population live on less that $2 a day
- developing countries lack the ability to pay for –>
food
agricultural innovation
investment in rural development
migration
international migration –> major consequence of inequalities between countries
globalisation –> increased awareness of the opportunities in developed countries
advanced transportation & reduced relative cost means mobility of the world’s population had never been higher
mexico —–> usa migration
mexicans migrate because:
- much higher average wages + lower unemployment rates in USA
- rapid growth in size of workforce in Mexico
- much higher quality of life in USA
brought benefits to Mexico:
- money sent back to families
- reduces unemployment pressure in Mexico
benefits to USA of Mexicans –> USA
- increased labour supply
HOWEVER
the scale of immigration makes it controversial
USA has done more to stop illegal immigration (The Wall)
