Explain simple carbohydrates.
Simple carbs are the quickest source of energy and easily digested in the body
Explain complex carbohydrates.
Complex carbohydrates are found in nearly all plant-based foods and usually take longer to digest
What are 2 simple carbohydrates commonly found in foods?
Fruits
Processed foods
What are 3 complex carbohydrates commonly found in foods?
Pasta
Bread
Rice
What are the three types of fats?
Saturated fats
Cholesterol
Trans-fats
Explain saturated fats.
Saturated fats can be found in both sweet & savoury foods coming mostly from animal sources. Intake of too many saturated fats can cause - excessive weight gain, reduce stamina, limit flexibility & lead to health problems (CHD),(HBP)
Explain cholesterol.
Cholesterol is a type of fat found in the blood. Too much saturated fats = increased cholesterol.
What are trans-fats?
Artificial hydrogenated fats and can be found in meat/dairy products. Made via an industrial process to increase shelf life but can cause high blood cholesterol & heart disease.
What is atherosclerosis?
Atherosclerosis is where the arteries become clogged up by fatty substances
What are high-density lipoproteins?
Proteins which transport excess blood back to the liver to be broken down (acting as “good cholesterol”)
What are low density lipoproteins?
These transport cholesterol in the blood to the tissue and are classed as “bad cholesterol”
What is muscular hypertrophy?
The building of more muscle mass & muscle size
What is muscular atrophy?
The loss of muscle mass & tissue
