Diaphragm Flashcards
What seperates the thorax from the abdomen
Diaphragm
What side of the diaphragm is slightly higher, Why?
The right side, because of the liver
What are the two parts of the diaphragm
Muscular par
Central tendont
What are the 3 points of origin of the diaphragm
Sternal = xyphoid process Costal = Lower 6 costal cartilages Lumber = Lumbar vertebra 1-3
What are the 3 openings in the diaphragm
Caval opening
Esophageal hiatus
Aortic Hiatus
Where is the caval opening located and what does it transmit
Located T8
Transmits inferior vena cava
Why is the vena cava firmly attached to the caval opening of the diaphragm
helps dilate vein during inspiration/ facilitates venous return
Where is the esophageal hiatus located. What does it transmit
Location: T10
Transmits: Esophagus, anterior + posteior vagal trunks
Where is the aortic hiatus located and what does it transmit
Location: T12
Transmits: Aorta, thoracic duct, azygos vein
What gives blood supply to the diaphragm
Musculophranic artery (from internal thoracic)
Pericardiacophrenic artery (from internal thoracic)
superior phrenic artery (from aorta)
inferior phrenic artery (from aorta)
What nerves give motor to the diaphragm
Phrenic nerve
What nerve gives sensory supply to the peripheral part of the diaphragm
Intercostal nerves
What are the three major events during respiration (inspiration)
Piston movement
Bucket handle movement
Pump Handle Movement
What happens during the piston movement
Diaphragm contracts, moving it down into the abdomen
What happens during the Bucket handle movement
the 7th to 10th ribs elevate to increase transverse diameter of the thorax
