Diagnostic oncology Flashcards
Methods to diagnose tumours
-Histopathology (H&E staining)
-Histochemical stains (Toluidine blue, or Duffy’s stain)
-Immunohistochemistry (expression of antigens helps identify cell of origin)
-Clonality Assays (PCR for receptor rearrangement)
Tumour grading
-attempt to sub classify tumours of similar cellular origin to better determine prognosis
>Mast cells OR soft tissue sarcomas. Can range from serious to just removal and animal will be fine.
Tumour grading systems
-when people are indecisive, they place everything into grade 2
**issues with consistency
Soft tissue sarcoma
Tumour staging
-method of indicating clinical spread of tumour. Describe what the tumour is doing:
>TMN
»Size of tumour (T)
»Lymph node involvement (N)
»Presence of metastasis (M)
Assessment of tumour margins
-excisional/incisional biopsies
-histologic evaluation of margins of biopsy specimens
Excisional biopsy
-take mass and a larger portion around it
Incisional biopsy
-take a slice/portion of the mass
-will get it tested and then figure out what to do
