Diagnosis in healthcare interaction Flashcards
Define ‘online commentary’
Doctors use a running commentary - connects to final diagnosis. Stops awkward silences and anxiety
Explain features of online commentary
- simultaneous with physical examination
- mainly used to present non-serious signs. DOWNGRADED. e.g. that’s a bit red
- absent signs are evidentially presented
- can be presented as reports or assessments
- online commentaries are delivered by docs, received by pats
Explain the ‘perspective display series’ (Maynard)
asking people for their views on something, and then presenting yours, which will often be shaped by theirs
‘perspective display series’ in ordinary talk
Question > answer > then a follow up
Occurs a lot in delicate situations, especially when doctors must give negative diagnosis
‘perspective display series’ in clinical interaction
Co-implicate = Doctor asks the mother what her opinion is, tries to manoeuvre her into first position so that he may agree – eases the final diagnosis responsibility
recipient of the news that delivers the bad news!!
