Diabetes risk factors Flashcards
Give three non-modifiable risk factors
Genetics, ethnicity and gestational diabetes
What genetics are a risk factor?
Child of a type 2 diabetic has 1/3 chance of getting it. Genetic defects of the B-cell can result.
What ethnicity is a risk factor?
6X more common in s.asians, 3x more common in africans and afro-carribean.
What is gestational diabetes?
insuling resistance due to pregnancy factors such as presence of ‘human placental lactogen’ that interferes with susceptible insulin receptors, increases risk of type 2 DM later in life and can increase risk of childhood obesity and also foetal probs like stillbirth
Name several modifiable factors
lack of sleep, lack of exercise, weight/diet
Why lack of sleep?
metabolism, a study done by Touma et al in 2011 on link between a lack of sleep and diabetes
Why lack of exercise?
Energy burnt is glucose removed from the blood stream
What is prediabetes?
impaired glucose tolerance, Prediabetes is the state in which some but not all of the diagnostic criteria for diabetes are met. It is often described as the “gray area” between normal blood sugar and diabetic levels. Can take steps to stop progession.
